Between the sea and the mountains: the Ifach Rock and the natural treasures of Benitachell

by | Practical advices

Discovering the natural treasures of Benitachell allows you to enjoy Cumbre del Sol even more.

The combination of coast and mountains gives rise to a series of wonders that will surprise you as soon as you get close to them. And of all of them, the Peñón de Ifach is one of those that stand out for its peculiarity.

The Rock of Ifach: the guardian of the Costa Blanca

Despite the fact that the rock is just over 20 kilometres from the urbanisation and Benitachell, it is a surprising natural space. The stone formation stands proudly out of the sea and imposes itself in front of Calpe itself.

El peñón de Ifach: its history and characteristics as a natural park

The site was declared a natural park in 1987 by the Valencian government at the time. Initially, an area of 45 hectares was set aside, but in 2015 it was extended to 53.3 hectares. In this way, the aim was to offer better protection to the rock in order to maintain its characteristics intact.

As for the park, most of it is made up of the Ifach rock, which has been linked to the coast by an isthmus. It is also one of the  last foothills of the Betic mountain range and is 332 metres high. As you can see, it is a geographical feature of great peculiarity.

Unique experiences on offer: hiking trails and panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea

To enjoy the park, there is a hiking route, the Red Route, whose route must be requested in advance. Walking the circuit will take about two hours and it is recommended to wear hiking shoes.

The route consists of two sections. The first runs from the visitor centre to the tunnel, which was built in 1918 to facilitate access to the other side of the rock. Before arriving, you can visit two viewpoints, the Poniente and Cavanilles, to enjoy a magnificent panoramic view.

After going through the tunnel, which is about 30 metres long, you reach the eastern side. The path narrows and the steepest section begins. However, the effort is rewarded, as it allows you to reach the top.

Its relevance as a symbol of the region’s natural beauty

One of the key features of the rock is its natural beauty, something you can see not only in its shape. It is home to a variety of animal and plant species, some of which are endemic. For example, the silene de Ifach is a plant that only grows in the north of Alicante and west of Ibiza.

Other essential natural spots in Benitachell and surroundings

Beyond Ifach, in Benitachell you can find other natural spots. These are the most relevant:

  • The natural park of La Granadella. There are 750 hectares of untouched land located next to the Cumbre del Sol residential estate. There are several easy routes to follow and it is a place of great tranquillity.
  • La Font Roja. Although it is 100 kilometres from the urbanisation, it is a natural park of great beauty and extension. It has its own microclimates, which has given rise to several unique ecosystems.
